Elbert Guillory announces run for 6th Congressional district
A new Republican challenger to Democrat favorite Cleo Field for CD-6
Hello all,
On July 4th, former Republican state senator Elbert Guillory announced his candidacy for the newly-configured 6th US Congressional district in Louisiana.
Here is his official announcement:
For those who don’t know, Elbert Guillory served as state representative and state senator in the Louisiana legislature from 2007 until 2016. Additionally, Guillory also campaigned unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor (2015 & 2023) and US Congress (2016).
Guillory was a lifelong Conservative Republican until he ran for office in 2007 and switched to the Democrat party. Then, he famously switched back to the Republican party in 2013— citing his conservative principles and the leftward drift of the Democrat party as his primary motivations for switching.
Here’s a viral video of Guillory explaining his switch back to the Republican party back in 2013:
Fast forward to last week, Elbert Guillory is the first major Republican to announce his candidacy for the newly-configured 6th US Congressional district in Louisiana.
CD-6 is the new gerrymandered, black-majority Congressional district that the LA Legislature approved earlier this year.
Last month, current US Congressman Garret Graves announced that he will not seek re-election in the newly-drawn, unfavorable district. Consequently, there was a void for Republicans in the CD-6 election with Graves not running.
Back in January, current Democrat state senator and former US Congressman Cleo Fields announced his candidacy for CD-6. Having raised over several hundred thousand dollars in campaign contributions, Fields is the presumptive favorite for this election.
If you frequently read The Hayride, then you probably know that Cleo Fields is bad news for the “Louisiana First” movement. He is undoubtedly a “Louisiana Last” politico whom we cannot afford to send to Washington DC again as a Congressman.
Only time will tell if Elbert Guillory can become a formidable opponent to Cleo Fields for this Congressional election. Guillory definitely has an uphill climb in this contest against Cleo Fields. Therefore, our hope is that the LAGOP rallies around Guillory in order to give him a better chance of winning.
